* CALAMUS FONT CONVERSIONS *
* *
* the full and awful story *
* *
******************************
One of the few problems with Calamus is the absence of high quality
fonts at a reasonable price. There's plenty of PD fonts available, but
most of them are poor. Enthusiasm doesn't compensate for lack of skill.
There's also plenty of commercial fonts, but at a price, and what a
price! Here's a few examples from DMC's 1989 price list:
Antique Olive (5 fonts in different weights and styles): $99.95
Compugraphic Omega (an Optima clone, 3 fonts): $99.95
Souvenir Gothic (2 fonts): $79.95
You can understand now why I was so pleased to be sent 20 discs of
Postscript Type 1 fonts earlier this year; fonts ripe for conversion.
And not just any old fonts - the scrapings of the imaginative barrel -
how about Bembo, or Perpetua, Optima perhaps, or Korinna? And not in the
one or two weights that you normally see, but as useable families:
Normal weight, Normal Italic, Bold and Bold Italic. I wiped the tears
from my eyes and reached for my font convertor.

>>> The fonts on this disc were converted from Postscript Type 1's to
Calamus format with Matthew Carey's superb 'Fonty' programme. Spacing
was set at 05/256, and kerning at 05 on either side. (But not
invariably, some fonts in this series have very different settings.)
>>> The Postscript originals came from the 16/32 Library and are, as far
as I know, free of copyright and entirely in the public domain. I'd be
grateful if you could let me know of any fonts included here which may
be subject to copyright.
>>> Most of the fonts have been renamed from their original, cryptic,
filenames, and the following convention has been used for weights and
styles:
L = Light, N = Normal, M = Medium, B = Bold, XB = Extra Bold
I = Italic, C = Condensed, E = Extended, etc.
***********************************************************************
This disc is just one of a series of 21 converted font discs that will
be available from the Floppyshop PD Library in December 1996 to February
1997. More discs may be added later, depending on suitable source
material.
But if you fancy a chat about fonts, typography or Calamus in the
meantime, then why not drop me a line?
